Rajasthan Government Reverses Decision to Celebrate Babri Demolition Day Amid Controversy

Rajasthan pulls back on plans to mark December 6 as Shaurya Diwas following backlash and exam concerns.

The Rajasthan government initially announced plans to observe December 6 as "Shaurya Diwas" to commemorate the demolition of the Babri Masjid, sparking significant controversy across the state. The decision, communicated through a circular by the Director of Secondary Education, called on government offices and private schools to organize speeches, essays, patriotic performances, and pledge-taking activities centered around the Ram Temple in Ayodhya as a symbol of cultural pride and national unity.

The circular detailed topics celebrating the “glory of Indian temple culture,” the “tradition of bravery and sacrifice,” and the critical role of youth in nation-building. It also proposed cultural activities like drawing contests, bhajans dedicated to Lord Ram, yoga sessions, and exhibitions highlighting the construction of the Ram Temple. Education Minister Madan Dilawar described December 6, 1992, as an act of bravery referring to the event as a historic moment of reclaiming the Ram temple site.

However, days after the announcement, the Rajasthan government abruptly withdrew the order, labeling previous reports about Shaurya Diwas celebrations as "baseless and misleading." Official sources cited academic examinations as the reason for the cancellation, though political observers suggest the move was motivated by concerns about stirring controversy ahead of upcoming local elections. The BJP-led administration appeared cautious about the possible fallout from celebrating such a sensitive event.
