BJP Heavyweights Land in Manipur as Centre Weighs Return of Elected Government

Top BJP leaders visit Manipur to review political situation ahead of possible government restoration.

A high-level delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including national general secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santosh and the party’s Northeast in-charge Sambit Patra, arrived in Manipur on Wednesday for a three-day visit to assess the state’s political situation. The visit comes amid growing speculation that the Centre may soon restore an elected government following months of political uncertainty under President’s Rule.

Since unrest broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023, the state has faced severe ethnic and political challenges. Following the resignation of then Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 8, 2025, the state was placed under President’s Rule on February 13. During their visit, Santosh and Patra are scheduled to meet BJP legislators, senior office-bearers, and coalition partners to evaluate the party’s preparedness and discuss steps to revive a functional administration.

Speaking briefly to reporters in Imphal, B.L. Santosh avoided confirming whether a new government would be formed but said, “Everything will be known.” According to party officials, the two leaders plan to hold joint consultations with members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to discuss strategies for restoring political normalcy and improving coordination among partners. The leaders will also visit Churachandpur district to meet Kuki community legislators and gather feedback on the ground situation and inter-community relations.

The visit follows a recent meeting in New Delhi where 26 BJP MLAs from Manipur urged the central leadership to reinstate a representative government. The legislators argued that the absence of an elected administration was hampering governance, delaying rehabilitation efforts, and eroding public confidence. “What legislators want is a government that reflects the aspirations of the people,” said BJP MLA Kh. Robindro Singh, adding that restoring political stability was vital for rebuilding trust ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also supported the call for reinstating a popular government, saying discussions during the recent meetings centered on issues such as rehabilitation of displaced families, ensuring safe travel along highways, and improving security coordination. “We pressed for restoring a representative government that can work closely with the people,” Singh said. Party insiders believe the BJP leadership’s visit could pave the way for final consultations before the Centre decides on the shape and timing of a restored administration in the violence-hit state.
