Rahul, Priyanka Gandhi Held Outside PM Modi’s Residence Amid Protest

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and other opposition leaders, were detained by Delhi Police during a protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence on Tuesday. The demonstration was organised by the Congress to demand accountability over alleged examination paper leaks and police action during an earlier student-led protest in the capital.
The protest was led by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The leaders and party workers marched from Kharge’s residence at Rajaji Marg towards Lok Kalyan Marg, where the Prime Minister’s residence is located. Police later intervened and removed several protesters from the site after Rahul Gandhi refused to leave.
Before being detained, Rahul Gandhi appealed to citizens to support the protest, alleging that the government’s response to student demonstrations amounted to an attack on families affected by examination-related concerns. He accused the Centre of avoiding responsibility and called for justice for students demanding action over alleged irregularities.

The protest also saw an interaction between Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh and Rahul Gandhi at the demonstration site. According to Congress leaders, the meeting did not lead to a resolution. Singh later stated that Gandhi had initially agreed to end the protest if a parliamentary discussion was allowed on examination issues but later added a demand for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The Congress demonstration followed a protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led group, during which police used crowd-control measures as protesters attempted to march towards Parliament. The CJP alleged that several demonstrators were injured, while Delhi Police claimed that protesters became violent, damaged property, and injured security personnel during clashes.
The BJP criticised the Congress protest, alleging that attempting to march towards the Prime Minister’s residence raised security concerns. Congress leaders rejected the accusation, maintaining that the demonstration was peaceful and aimed at highlighting student concerns. The protest also reflected divisions among opposition parties, with the Aam Aadmi Party distancing itself and accusing Congress of diverting attention from the CJP-led movement.
