Puducherry Polls: Alliance Tensions Rise As 30-Seat Contest Turns Close
Alliance rift surfaces as Puducherry braces for tight election contest.
Tensions have surfaced within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Puducherry ahead of the high-stakes Assembly elections, with all 30 seats set to go to polls in a tightly contested battle. The internal strain comes at a crucial time as the alliance seeks to retain power in the Union Territory.
At the centre of the friction is a disagreement between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy-led All India NR Congress (AINRC). The BJP has reportedly rejected Rangasamy’s demand for full statehood for Puducherry, as well as his call to remove a regional ally linked to a controversial business family from the alliance. This has raised questions over cohesion within the ruling bloc even as campaigning intensifies.
Despite the discord, the NDA has moved forward with its electoral strategy, dividing the 30 constituencies between its key partners. AINRC is contesting 16 seats while the BJP is fielding candidates in 14, reflecting a negotiated seat-sharing arrangement aimed at maximising electoral gains. The alliance has also rolled out a series of welfare promises, including subsidised meals, free LPG cylinders, and infrastructure initiatives like water ATMs and improved rail connectivity.

The election, scheduled for April 9, is shaping into a triangular contest, with the Congress-DMK alliance and actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as significant challengers. The opposition front has countered with its own set of welfare assurances, including free rations, scholarships, and renewed calls for full statehood.
Political observers note that the presence of multiple strong players has made the race unusually competitive. With shifting alliances, internal disagreements, and overlapping voter bases, the outcome is expected to hinge on narrow margins across constituencies.
As campaigning enters its final phase, the ruling alliance’s ability to manage internal differences could prove decisive. With all 30 seats in play and no clear frontrunner, Puducherry is set for a closely fought electoral contest that could reshape the Union Territory’s political landscape.
