Political Outrage Erupts After ZEE5 Abruptly Pulls Jaswant Singh Khalra Biopic 'Satluj' in India

The removal of Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Satluj from streaming platform ZEE5 in India just two days after its release has sparked a political controversy in Punjab, with prominent Sikh institutions and political leaders condemning the decision. The film, which is based on the efforts of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra to expose alleged extrajudicial killings during the militancy era in Punjab, has drawn widespread attention following its abrupt withdrawal from the OTT platform.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which manages several historic gurdwaras, and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have come out in support of the film, arguing that it highlights a significant chapter of Punjab's history. The controversy has reignited debate over freedom of expression, censorship and the portrayal of sensitive historical events in Indian cinema. Neither ZEE5 nor the filmmakers immediately issued a detailed public explanation for the film's removal at the time of the controversy.

Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal strongly criticised the decision, describing the removal as an attack on historical truth and democratic values. In a post on social media platform X, Badal said he was "shocked and saddened" by what he called the arbitrary removal of Satluj from ZEE5 in India. He said the film courageously portrays Punjab's painful past and pays tribute to the sacrifice of Jaswant Singh Khalra, whose efforts to investigate alleged human rights violations during the militancy period earned national and international recognition.

Calling the move "more than mere censorship," Badal argued that it amounted to "an assault on our collective memory, truth and freedom of expression." He further said Punjab should be allowed to confront its past honestly rather than suppress difficult chapters of its history. His remarks were echoed by supporters of the film, who argued that stories rooted in historical events deserve to be accessible to the public, even when they address controversial subjects.

Satluj explores the struggle of an activist seeking to uncover alleged fake encounters and unlawful killings during one of Punjab's most turbulent periods in the 1980s and 1990s, when militancy and counter-insurgency operations left thousands affected. Jaswant Singh Khalra became widely known for documenting cases of unidentified cremations and alleged custodial killings, work that eventually brought international attention to human rights concerns in the state. His disappearance and subsequent killing remain among the most significant human rights cases associated with that era.

The controversy surrounding the film's removal has also renewed discussions about artistic freedom and the responsibilities of streaming platforms when handling politically and historically sensitive content. As criticism continues from political leaders and Sikh organisations, attention is now focused on whether ZEE5 will clarify the reasons behind the decision or reconsider the film's availability. The episode has once again highlighted the enduring sensitivity surrounding Punjab's militancy period and the ongoing debate over how its history should be represented in public discourse.
