Owaisi Proposes SP-AIMIM Alliance For 2027 UP Assembly Elections

Owaisi offers alliance to Akhilesh Yadav ahead of UP polls.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has expressed willingness to form an alliance with the Samajwadi Party ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, urging party president Akhilesh Yadav to begin discussions before the electoral battle intensifies. Speaking at an event in Moradabad, Owaisi said his party was prepared to join hands with the Samajwadi Party to prevent the BJP from returning to power in the state.

Addressing supporters, Owaisi said the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) did not want the BJP to form the next government in Uttar Pradesh and was open to contesting the elections as part of a broader opposition alliance. He suggested that delaying talks could prove costly after the elections, adding that now was the appropriate time for negotiations between the two parties.

Owaisi also responded to criticism that AIMIM's participation in elections divides opposition votes. He said he was willing to contest alongside the Samajwadi Party rather than compete against it, arguing that a united opposition would be better placed to challenge the ruling BJP. He reiterated that AIMIM's political struggle was centred on issues of equality, justice and constitutional rights rather than religion.

During his speech, Owaisi maintained that his party's objective was to secure equal rights and dignity for all citizens. He said AIMIM sought justice and representation, adding that he was prepared to engage in dialogue with Akhilesh Yadav on these issues if the Samajwadi Party was willing to hold discussions on a potential alliance.

The Bharatiya Janata Party criticised Owaisi's remarks, describing the proposal as an example of vote-bank politics. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla mocked the alliance offer, saying Owaisi had effectively sent a "friend request" to Akhilesh Yadav. He also alleged that both leaders were competing over appeasement politics and claimed they were now attempting to collaborate instead.

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in 2027 and are expected to be one of the country's most closely watched political contests. The Samajwadi Party remains the principal opposition force in the state, while the BJP, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, will seek another term in office. As of now, the Samajwadi Party has not publicly responded to Owaisi's proposal for an electoral alliance.
