Nitish Kumar Likely to Move to Rajya Sabha, BJP to Appoint Next Bihar CM say Sources

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar may resign; son Nishant to take Deputy CM post, BJP to pick next CM.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is reportedly set to resign from his post and move to the Rajya Sabha, with sources indicating that his son, Nishant Kumar, is likely to assume the role of Deputy Chief Minister. The new Chief Minister, according to sources, will be a BJP leader, marking a significant political transition in the state.

The potential shift has been anticipated since before the 2025 assembly elections, though no immediate action was taken due to Kumar’s longstanding political stature. At 75, Kumar has been sworn in as Chief Minister a record ten times, maintaining leadership since 2015 except for a brief period when Jitan Ram Manjhi held the office.

Kumar has played a central role in electoral campaigns across Bihar, representing both the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Grand Alliance Mahagathbandhan at different points. His consistent popularity has allowed him to secure voter support despite shifting political alignments and alliances over the years.

His 2025 electoral comeback defied predictions by political analysts, largely driven by initiatives that resonated with key voter groups. Programs such as the cycle scheme for schoolgirls and the state-wide liquor ban significantly bolstered his appeal, especially among women voters.

Political observers note that this transition represents both a generational shift and a recalibration of power within Bihar’s ruling coalition, with the BJP expected to assume the Chief Ministership while maintaining the Kumar family’s influence through Nishant Kumar’s deputy role.

As the state prepares for this change, attention will focus on how the new leadership balances continuity with fresh governance approaches, particularly in areas where Nitish Kumar’s policies have historically had strong support.
