Political War of Words Erupts as BJP Rebukes Congress for Criticism of PM Modi’s visit to Israel

BJP calls Congress an army of rats for criticizing PM Modi amid US-Israel strikes on Iran.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday slammed the opposition Indian National Congress for criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the wake of US and Israeli strikes on Iran, calling Congress an “army of rats” and accusing it of making “negative comments” on sensitive matters.

The controversy erupted after Congress leaders questioned Modi’s visit to Israel just days before the joint military operations. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh criticized the Prime Minister on X, stating that Modi’s recent visit to Israel demonstrated “the highest moral cowardice” and accused him of publicly aligning India with Israel while the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran.

Pawan Khera, head of Congress’s media and publicity department, also took aim at Modi, highlighting the timing of the strikes shortly after his return from Israel. He questioned why Modi did not use his trip to de-escalate tensions between Israel and Iran, suggesting that his visit could be interpreted as an endorsement of the military action.

Responding to these remarks, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia dismissed the criticism as “childish” and described Congress as having stooped to “extreme brazenness.” He said that the BJP-led government will continue to make decisions “in the interest of Bharat and its people” and urged the opposition to have faith in the government’s handling of sensitive international situations.

Bhatia added that Congress’s pattern of negative commentary on developing stories undermines national discourse and expressed regret that conflict has erupted in West Asia during a period of heightened regional tensions. He reiterated that the government remains focused on safeguarding India’s interests.

The spat reflects growing political polarization in India over international developments. While Congress has framed Modi’s Israel visit as poorly timed amid escalating US-Israel-Iran tensions, the BJP maintains that foreign policy decisions are being made with national priorities in mind, underscoring the domestic political stakes of the Middle East crisis.
