NCP Heavyweights Race for Sunetra Pawar's Rajya Sabha Seat; Bhujbal, Jay Pawar Emerge as Frontrunners
NCP leaders race for Sunetra Pawar's vacant Rajya Sabha seat.
The race to fill the vacant Rajya Sabha seat left by Sunetra Pawar has intensified within the Nationalist Congress Party, with several senior leaders and family members emerging as possible contenders. Sunetra Pawar resigned from the Upper House to focus on her expanded responsibilities in Maharashtra politics, triggering intense lobbying within the party ranks.
Among the frontrunners being discussed is senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal, who remains one of the party’s most experienced leaders. Bhujbal’s name is reportedly gaining traction because of his long administrative and organisational experience within Maharashtra politics.
Another name being widely discussed is Jay Pawar, the younger son of Sunetra Pawar. However, Jay Pawar publicly downplayed speculation over his possible nomination and stated that he preferred to continue working among the people in Baramati rather than move to Parliament.
The vacancy has sparked internal discussions at a crucial time for the Nationalist Congress Party as it looks to balance generational leadership, regional representation, and political equations within the Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra. Several senior party leaders are believed to be quietly pushing their claims for the prestigious seat.
Sunetra Pawar had submitted her resignation from the Rajya Sabha to Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan earlier this week. Her exit has created an important political opening within the party, especially as the NCP continues to recalibrate its leadership structure ahead of upcoming political battles in Maharashtra.
The final decision on the Rajya Sabha nominee is expected to be taken by the top leadership of the Nationalist Congress Party after consultations with alliance partners and senior organisational leaders.
