WHO Warns of New Hantavirus Cases Linked to Deadly Cruise Ship Outbreak

WHO warns of more hantavirus cases; three dead aboard ship.

The World Health Organization has warned that additional hantavirus cases could emerge following a deadly outbreak linked to a cruise ship, though the agency believes the situation can remain contained if proper precautions are maintained. The alert comes after three passengers travelling aboard the Dutch-flagged cruise vessel MV Hondius died from the infection, triggering international concern over the spread of the rare disease.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said health authorities have so far identified five confirmed and three suspected cases connected to the outbreak. Officials are continuing efforts to trace infections and monitor passengers who disembarked from the vessel during earlier stages of the journey. Another ill passenger reportedly arrived in Europe on Thursday as the ship continued towards Spain’s Canary Islands.

The outbreak has drawn global attention because the strain involved is believed to have limited potential for human-to-human transmission, unlike more common rodent-borne hantavirus infections. However, health officials stressed that the virus remains significantly less contagious than Covid-19 and that current evidence does not indicate the risk of a widespread global outbreak at this stage.

Authorities believe the first known fatalities were a Dutch couple who had travelled through South America before boarding the ship in Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1. Argentine health officials said they are still unable to determine the exact origin of the outbreak despite ongoing investigations involving national and regional health agencies. Officials from all 24 Argentine provinces reportedly participated in emergency consultations regarding the situation.

US President Donald Trump also addressed the outbreak on Thursday, saying he had been briefed by health authorities and expressing confidence that the situation was being controlled. Trump stated that experts were continuing to study the incident and that a full report on the outbreak was expected soon.

Hantavirus is a rare but potentially fatal disease usually transmitted through contact with infected rodents or contaminated environments. In rare instances, certain strains can spread between humans through close contact. Health authorities across multiple countries are now coordinating passenger tracing, medical observation, and containment measures as the investigation into the cruise ship outbreak continues.
