MLA Revolt In Gujarat BJP Reveals Internal Rift During Party Celebration

Gujarat BJP celebration disrupted as MLA revolt exposes internal party rift.

A BJP celebration marking 12 years of “good governance” in Gujarat’s Narmada district was disrupted on Monday after Nandod MLA Dr Darshanaben Deshmukh staged a walkout and sit-in protest, alleging repeated humiliation and sidelining by the district party leadership. The incident has exposed internal tensions within the local unit of the party and triggered political unease over organisational discipline and tribal representation.

The event, organised to honour distinguished citizens, was attended by several senior leaders, including Minister-in-Charge Ishwar Singh Patel and former Forest Minister Ganpat Vasava. However, the programme was overshadowed when the MLA publicly objected to what she described as disrespectful treatment by organisers, following which she left the venue mid-event and staged a protest outside.

Dr Deshmukh alleged that she had been consistently sidelined by the district BJP leadership for the past two years. She claimed that the protocol due to an elected representative was not followed at the event, stating that she was neither formally welcomed nor accorded the respect typically extended to sitting legislators. According to her, the incident was part of a broader pattern of disregard she has faced within the local organisational structure.

After walking out, the MLA staged a dharna outside the venue, further escalating the situation. She also warned that she was prepared to resign not only from party organisational responsibilities but even from her position as MLA if the alleged disrespect continued, underscoring the seriousness of the internal dispute.

Dr Deshmukh further alleged that District BJP President Neel Rao had been acting unilaterally with the backing of an influential leader from Gandhinagar. She claimed this concentration of authority had created resentment within the local party ranks and weakened internal cohesion at the grassroots level, particularly in tribal-dominated areas where representation remains politically sensitive.

The public protest has drawn attention to simmering factional differences within the district BJP unit, turning what was intended as a celebratory political event into a display of internal discord. Party leaders are yet to issue a formal response to the allegations, while the incident is expected to intensify discussions within the state unit over organisational coordination and leadership accountability.
