Mamata Banerjee Targets Railways, Showcases Development Push in Debra

Mamata Banerjee highlights Debra development, criticises Railways over delays.

West Bengal Chief Minister and All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday highlighted extensive development initiatives in Debra while criticising delays in key railway infrastructure projects in the region. Addressing a public meeting at the Balichak Bhajahari Institution Ground, she outlined improvements in healthcare, education, and connectivity, alongside a sharp political appeal ahead of elections.

Banerjee pointed to several completed and ongoing projects, including a super speciality hospital, a block public health unit, and an ITI polytechnic college. She said more than 120 roads have been built or renovated, along with multiple bridges, with investments running into hundreds of crores. She also highlighted 53 drinking water projects underway in the Debra block and an integrated English-medium school for Adivasi students developed at a cost of nearly ₹9 crore.

Taking aim at the Railway Ministry, the Chief Minister alleged that delays in completing a long-sanctioned flyover were hindering further development work in the area. “If they don't complete the work, how can we complete our work that is supposed to happen under the bridge?” she said, urging authorities to expedite the project.

Banerjee also detailed welfare schemes implemented by her government, including Laxmir Bhandar, Kanyashree, Patha Sathi, and the student credit card initiative. She said these programmes have significantly improved the quality of life, particularly for women and students, while also citing the Karmasathi scheme and the establishment of an electrical substation and bus terminus in the region.

Highlighting agricultural and flood-control measures, she said the government has dug 5.5 lakh ponds and constructed several check dams to mitigate flooding. She added that electricity bills for irrigation pumps up to ₹2,000 have been waived and that over 54 lakh metric tonnes of paddy are procured from farmers for distribution through welfare schemes.

In her address, Banerjee also made a strong political pitch, urging voters to support the AITC to continue receiving the benefits of government schemes and to counter the BJP. Emphasising unity across communities, she called for collective support for party candidates in the region, stating that every seat would be crucial in forming the government.
