A protest led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took place in Kolkata on Tuesday, with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleging targeted attacks on its leaders and raising concerns over post-poll violence, hawker evictions, and related administrative issues in the state.
The demonstration was held at Esplanade’s Y-channel after Kolkata Police reportedly denied permission for the party to set up a stage and use microphones at the originally proposed venue near Rani Rashmoni Road. Despite the restrictions, Banerjee proceeded with the protest, addressing supporters using a megaphone.
Before beginning the sit-in, Banerjee paid floral tributes at the statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and was seen carrying a copy of the Constitution of India, alongside senior party leaders. The protest was organised to highlight alleged attacks on TMC leaders, including MP Kalyan Banerjee and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

The gathering witnessed participation from several senior TMC leaders, including Firhad Hakim, Derek O’Brien, Madan Mitra, Kalyan Banerjee, and Dola Sen. However, the absence of several newly elected party legislators was notable during the demonstration.
According to the TMC, the protest is aimed at condemning incidents of alleged post-poll violence and what it describes as targeted intimidation of its leaders during visits to affected areas in West Bengal. The party has also raised concerns over eviction drives affecting hawkers, which it claims have contributed to public unrest.
Banerjee stated that the protest would continue as scheduled despite logistical constraints, underscoring her party’s allegations of political bias and administrative pressure in the state. The situation comes amid ongoing political tension between the ruling TMC and opposition groups in West Bengal.
