Mamata Banerjee Faces Fresh Setback As Another Trinamool Mayor Resigns
Mayor's resignation adds to Trinamool's growing political troubles.
Trinamool Congress leader Krishna Chakraborty resigned as the mayor of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation on Thursday, bringing an end to a long tenure in one of West Bengal's key urban local bodies. The resignation comes amid a period of political attention on developments within the state's ruling party, although Chakraborty maintained that her decision was entirely personal.
A close associate of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for several years, Chakraborty submitted her resignation to the municipal commissioner earlier in the day. Copies of the resignation letter were also sent to the state's municipal affairs minister and the additional chief secretary of the department, according to civic body officials.
Speaking to reporters after stepping down, Chakraborty said she had served in the position for 16 years and now wished to devote more time to herself. She stressed that her decision was not driven by any dispute or grievance and that she had followed all required procedures while tendering her resignation. She also indicated that she intends to continue serving as a councillor.

Officials at the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation confirmed receiving the resignation and said the matter would be processed in accordance with established rules. The civic body has not yet announced the timeline for selecting a successor or the next steps in the administrative process following her departure.
Chakraborty's resignation marks a significant development in the administration of one of West Bengal's most prominent municipalities. As a senior Trinamool Congress leader and long-serving mayor, she played an important role in overseeing civic affairs in Bidhannagar, and her exit is expected to trigger discussions within the party and local administration regarding future leadership of the corporation.
