Lok Sabha Speaker Warns: Parliament Losing Public Trust Amid Growing Chaos
Speaker Om Birla urges MPs to restore respect, decorum, and public trust in Parliament.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed deep concern over the eroding dignity of legislative bodies, calling for introspection among political parties and parliamentarians during his valedictory address at the All India Speakers Conference hosted by the Delhi Assembly on Monday. Highlighting the critical role of presiding officers, Birla emphasized that they must be perceived as impartial and just to uphold the integrity of parliamentary sessions.
Addressing the decline in the decorum of legislative proceedings, Birla noted that the constitutional privilege of free speech within the House, intended to foster robust debate even against the government, has been undermined. “The intention behind this freedom has seen a decline, which is a matter of concern for all of us,” he remarked, urging stakeholders to reflect on restoring the sanctity of democratic institutions.
Birla stressed the importance of conducting parliamentary sessions with a focus on meaningful discussions that address public interest issues. He called on Members of Parliament to transcend partisan divides and align their efforts with the expectations of their constituents. “The Houses must become the voice of the people, reflecting their suggestions and opinions meaningfully,” he asserted.

The Speaker also underscored the need for respectful language and conduct both inside and outside the legislature. “Disagreement is the strength of democracy, but members must maintain a code of conduct. People are watching our words and actions,” he said. Birla urged political parties to ensure freedom of speech while safeguarding the dignity of legislative bodies, warning that failure to do so risks undermining public trust in democratic processes.
The conference, attended by presiding officers from across India, served as a platform to address challenges facing legislative functioning, with Birla’s remarks setting a tone for renewed commitment to democratic values and public accountability.
