KN Nehru Says DMK Must Strengthen Kalaignar Brand After TVK Growth
DMK admits underestimating TVK, urges Kalaignar brand revival.
DMK Principal Secretary K. N. Nehru acknowledged on Wednesday that his party had underestimated the impact of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and its social media-driven appeal to young and family voters during the recent Assembly elections. Speaking at a meeting of party functionaries at Kalaignar Arivalayam in Tiruchy, Nehru said the party had focused primarily on opposing the AIADMK and failed to anticipate TVK’s rapid outreach through platforms like Instagram.
Reviewing the election outcome, Nehru said the overall vote gap between the ruling front and the DMK-led alliance was about 17 lakh votes. He noted that the DMK narrowly lost 27 constituencies by margins of roughly 1,000 to 2,000 votes, and suggested that a late shift in public mood during the final days of campaigning affected those results. “We did not take them seriously. We underestimated them and focused only in opposing AIADMK. But TVK used social media very strategically and directly reached youngsters and families,” he said.
Nehru singled out TVK’s use of Instagram, particularly a channel or initiative he referred to as “Route,” as decisive in altering voter sentiment in the campaign’s closing days. “In the last three days before elections everything changed dramatically,” he said, arguing the party must learn from the way newer political formations deploy short-format content and targeted outreach to sway undecided voters.

To rebuild momentum, Nehru urged DMK cadres to revive the “Kalaignar brand” and use the June 3 birth anniversary of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi as an opportunity to reconnect with voters. He called for visible grassroots activity, including flag hoisting, distribution of welfare-related assistance, and the circulation of videos showcasing Karunanidhi’s achievements to attract younger audiences on social media.
The meeting adopted resolutions directing party units across Tiruchy Central and North districts to intensify local engagement and digital outreach ahead of upcoming bypolls. Nehru stressed the historical importance of Tiruchy for the DMK, saying the district had supported the party through past political crises and urging functionaries not to be complacent but to diagnose the causes of defeat and “work at lightning speed” to rebuild the organisation.
The remarks reflect broader challenges for established parties confronting agile newcomers that leverage social platforms and youth-focused messaging. For the DMK, the next weeks will test its ability to translate internal reviews and anniversary-driven outreach into renewed voter confidence and improved performance in the by-elections.
