DMK Retains Influence In Vijay’s Tamil Nadu Coalition Strategy Analysis

Actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay is set to become Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after his party, TVK, secured enough legislative support through a coalition arrangement that includes backing from smaller parties. The development comes after Vijay reportedly demonstrated majority support to the Governor and is expected to prove it again on the floor of the Assembly after being sworn in.

The decisive numbers were provided by the VCK and the IUML, each contributing two MLAs to support the formation of the TVK-led government. However, both parties have clarified that their backing does not amount to a complete break from the DMK-led alliance, raising questions about the political complexity of the arrangement.

The VCK has publicly stated that it continues to remain aligned with the DMK alliance, even while extending support to the new government. Party leader Thol Thirumavalavan said the decision was aimed at avoiding a constitutional crisis and the possibility of President’s Rule in the state, and also noted that Chief Minister MK Stalin was informed of the party’s stance.

The IUML has adopted a similar position, maintaining its association with the DMK while still supporting the TVK-led administration. This dual alignment has created an unusual political situation in which smaller coalition partners are simultaneously linked to both the ruling formation and the principal opposition alliance.

The emerging arrangement places the TVK government in a delicate position, with its legislative majority dependent on parties that continue to maintain ties with its main political rival. The situation highlights the fluid nature of coalition politics in Tamil Nadu and sets the stage for a closely watched legislative term once Vijay assumes office.
