VCK Activities Keep Political Tension High Between Vijay And Tamil Nadu Leadership

VCK political moves keep Vijay under Tamil Nadu pressure.

Superstar Actor Vijay’s political journey from cinema icon to aspiring Chief Minister faced fresh uncertainty on Friday night after two key allies—the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK)—declined, for now, to support his two-year-old Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in forming the next government in Tamil Nadu. The setback has complicated the party’s post-election arithmetic and stalled its immediate push toward a legislative majority.

The IUML and AMMK together hold three seats won in last month’s election, and two of those were reportedly being counted on by TVK as part of its effort to reach the 118-seat majority mark. With the party currently short of that threshold, the refusal effectively pushed Vijay’s camp back to the drawing board at a critical political juncture.

The development came just hours after Vijay met Governor RV Arlekar, a meeting that TVK had hoped would advance its claim to form the government. However, the governor is said to have insisted on verifying 118 written letters of support rather than accepting a floor-strength demonstration in the Assembly, a move that sources within TVK viewed as an obstacle to its immediate prospects.

Attention has now shifted to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which has two MLAs whose support could prove decisive. TVK had initially believed these seats were within reach, but party Chief Thol Thirumavalavan has so far remained non-committal about breaking ranks with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) alliance, leaving the outcome uncertain.

On Wednesday, VCK and Left party leaders met DMK President M K Stalin to discuss their political options, including a possible shift toward Vijay’s alliance. According to sources, Stalin left the decision to the parties themselves, indicating they were free to choose based on their interests, which opened the door for further negotiations.

Following that meeting, TVK reached out to multiple parties, including CPI, CPM, VCK, and IUML, in an attempt to consolidate support. While eight seats were theoretically in play, the party required at least six after securing backing from the Congress. However, discussions remained inconclusive through Thursday, with CPI and CPM leaning toward offering only external or issue-based support, keeping the suspense over Vijay’s government formation bid alive.
