Kerala CPI–CPM Dispute Emerges Over Deputy Opposition Leader Post
CPI–CPM dispute over opposition post exposes alliance tensions.
A fresh political disagreement between the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India has surfaced in Kerala, after a dispute over the post of Deputy Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly exposed growing friction within the Left Democratic Front. The issue has once again highlighted the uneasy working relationship between the two key allies in the ruling coalition.
The matter came to a head after a bilateral meeting between CPI(M) and CPI state secretaries on Wednesday ended without reaching any resolution. With no compromise in sight, the disagreement has now deepened, raising concerns over coordination within the opposition camp in the Kerala Assembly. Both sides have maintained firm positions on the claim to the post.
The CPI has been insisting that its role as the second-largest constituent of the Left Democratic Front should be reflected in key Assembly responsibilities, including the Deputy Opposition Leader’s position. CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam said the party was under internal pressure to stand firm on its demand and that any compromise would be difficult at this stage.

However, the CPI(M) leadership has conveyed that it is not in a position to accept the demand. The party has pointed out that historically such positions have been handled differently within the alliance structure. With both sides holding their ground, the discussions have so far failed to produce a workable solution.
The ongoing disagreement has revived memories of earlier tensions between the two parties during the tenure of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. In the past, CPI ministers had even boycotted a Cabinet meeting as a mark of protest, while differences had also emerged over policy matters such as the implementation of the PM-SHRI education programme, which the state later withdrew from after objections.
As the Kerala Assembly session approaches, both parties now face pressure to resolve the issue and prevent further strain within the Left alliance. CPI(M) state leadership has emphasized past arrangements where similar positions were held by its own members, while CPI continues to assert its separate identity within the coalition. The outcome of the talks is expected to shape the future dynamics of the Left Democratic Front in the state.
