TMC Led By Mamata Banerjee Appoints Sovandeb Chattopadhyay As Leader Of Opposition
TMC appoints veteran Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition amid West Bengal party reshuffle.
Veteran Trinamool Congress leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, marking a significant organisational reshuffle within the party following its electoral setback. The decision comes amid internal restructuring efforts within the Trinamool Congress as it attempts to stabilise its legislative leadership after a challenging political phase in the state.
Chattopadhyay’s elevation is being seen as an attempt by the party to bring experience and credibility into its opposition bench. Known for his long association with the party and close ties with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he is widely regarded as one of the founding figures of the Trinamool Congress. Party insiders have described his appointment as a move that prioritises organisational stability over generational change.
The veteran leader, who has held multiple key positions over the years including Power Minister and Chief Whip in the state assembly, is known for his strong grassroots connections and involvement in labour movements. He has also been associated with trade union work, particularly representing informal sector workers in Kolkata. Despite internal debates within the party over leadership succession, Chattopadhyay has remained a consistent presence in the organisation for decades.

His appointment comes at a time when the Trinamool Congress is undergoing internal reflection following electoral losses and leadership discussions. The party, which holds 80 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly, remains the principal opposition force in the state. Alongside Chattopadhyay, senior leaders such as Nayna Bandyopadhyay and Asima Patra have also been assigned deputy leadership roles in the opposition structure.
Party dynamics have reportedly been influenced by differing views on leadership succession and organisational reforms, including earlier discussions around age limits for political roles. However, senior leadership has maintained that continuity and experience remain crucial for managing the party’s legislative strategy in the assembly.
Chattopadhyay, who has been active in politics for over three decades, is considered a seasoned organiser with deep connections to both rural and urban constituencies. His appointment is expected to strengthen the party’s floor coordination in the assembly as it positions itself against the ruling government. Political observers say the move signals a cautious rebuilding phase for the Trinamool Congress as it recalibrates its strategy in West Bengal politics.
