Kerala Cabinet Portfolios Announced: Satheesan Retains Finance, Chennithala Gets Home
Kerala cabinet portfolios announced; key ministries allocated.
The Kerala government on Tuesday announced the allocation of portfolios in the newly formed state cabinet, marking the first major administrative restructuring following the swearing-in of the new government. The announcement was issued through a notification by Kerala Lok Bhavan.
Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan has retained charge of 35 key departments, including Finance, Law, General Administration, and Ports. The allocation places significant administrative and fiscal responsibility under the Chief Minister’s direct oversight, consolidating core governance functions within the Chief Minister’s Office.
Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala has been assigned the Home and Vigilance portfolios, two of the most critical departments in the state administration. In addition, he will oversee three other departments, strengthening his role in internal security, law enforcement supervision, and administrative accountability.

According to the official notification, the portfolio distribution reflects the government’s effort to balance administrative efficiency with political responsibilities among senior cabinet members. The allocation process follows standard post-swearing-in procedures in which departments are assigned based on experience, seniority, and governance priorities.
The Home department, now under Chennithala, is considered one of the most sensitive portfolios, as it oversees policing, internal security, and law and order across the state. The Vigilance department also plays a key role in anti-corruption oversight and enforcement actions within public administration.
The Chief Minister’s retention of major financial and administrative departments signals continued centralisation of core governance decisions within his office. Officials are expected to release further details regarding the allocation of remaining departments among other cabinet ministers in the coming days.
