Karti Chidambaram Questions PM's "Seven Appeals"; Demands Parliament Session

Karti P Chidambaram on Monday questioned the “very serious directives” issued by the Prime Minister’s Office and urged the Centre to immediately convene a session of Parliament to explain Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent “seven appeals” made to citizens amid growing global uncertainty and geopolitical tensions.
The Congress MP raised concerns after a post shared by MyGov India on X highlighted the Prime Minister’s appeals under the slogan “Nation First, Duty Above Comfort!" The advisory encouraged citizens to adopt several austerity and conservation measures, including prioritising work from home, reducing fuel consumption, avoiding unnecessary foreign travel for one year, purchasing Swadeshi products, and cutting down edible oil usage to strengthen the country during a challenging global situation.
Responding publicly to the announcement, Karti Chidambaram questioned the reasons behind what he described as unusually serious appeals from the government. In his statement on social media, he asked what had triggered the advisories and demanded that the centre take the nation into confidence. He said Parliament should be convened immediately so that the government could explain the “true state of affairs” that led to the issuance of the directives.
The Prime Minister’s appeals come at a time when India, along with several other countries, is closely monitoring the economic impact of escalating tensions in West Asia. Rising crude oil prices, concerns over global supply chain disruptions, and uncertainty surrounding international trade routes have increased pressure on economies heavily dependent on energy imports. The Centre has indicated that the measures are intended to conserve foreign exchange reserves and reduce the impact of international instability on the Indian economy.
Political reactions to the appeals have intensified across opposition parties, with several leaders interpreting the government’s message as a sign of deeper economic concerns linked to the global crisis. Critics have argued that such advisories indicate the possibility of mounting inflationary pressures and economic strain, while also questioning why Parliament was not briefed before the appeals were made public. Opposition leaders have increasingly called for greater transparency regarding the government’s assessment of the international situation.
The government has maintained that the appeals are precautionary in nature and part of a broader effort to encourage responsible consumption and national preparedness during uncertain times. Officials have described the initiative as a “Nation First” approach designed to promote self-reliance, energy conservation, and economic resilience.
