Karnataka Bypolls: Meti’s Son, Shamanur’s Grandson Nominated By Congress

Congress fields heirs in Bagalkot, Davanagere South bypolls.

The ruling Congress party in Karnataka has decided to field family members of two deceased MLAs in the upcoming by-elections to the Bagalkot and Davanagere South Assembly constituencies. In Bagalkot, the party will nominate Umesh Meti, one of the sons of the late legislator H.Y. Meti, while in Davanagere South, Samarth Mallikarjun—grandson of the late Shamanur Shivashankarappa and son of state minister S.S. Mallikarjun—has been selected as the candidate. These choices continue the trend of dynastic politics in the state, aiming to leverage family legacy and community support to retain the seats.

The by-elections, scheduled for April 9 with vote counting on May 4, were necessitated by the deaths of H.Y. Meti in Bagalkot and Shamanur Shivashankarappa in Davanagere South, both veteran Congress leaders and former ministers. H.Y. Meti, a prominent Kuruba community figure, had won the Bagalkot seat in the 2023 assembly polls with a narrow margin over BJP's Veeranna Charantimath. In Davanagere South, Shamanur Shivashankarappa, a influential Lingayat leader, secured a comfortable victory in 2023 against BJP's B.G. Ajay Kumar. The Congress views these constituencies as strongholds and is keen to defend them amid internal pressures.

In Bagalkot, the decision to field Umesh Meti followed intense family deliberations and intervention by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Multiple family members, including Meti's other son Mallikarjun Meti and daughters, had vied for the ticket, leading to factional tensions. The consensus on Umesh emerged after discussions involving Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and senior party leaders, aiming to unify the Kuruba vote base and avoid internal rebellion.

For Davanagere South, Samarth Mallikarjun's candidacy reflects the Shamanur family's strong insistence on retaining influence in the seat. Samarth, son of Mines and Geology Minister S.S. Mallikarjun and Lok Sabha MP Prabha Mallikarjun, had earlier filed nomination papers proactively—even without the official party 'B' form—signaling the family's determination. The move has drawn some criticism from minority leaders within Congress, who advocated for a Muslim candidate given the constituency's demographics, but the high command prioritized family continuity.

These selections come as the BJP has already announced its candidates—Veerabhadrayya Charantimath for Bagalkot and Srinivas T. Dasakariyappa for Davanagere South—positioning the bypolls as a direct contest between legacy politics and opposition challenges. The outcomes could impact the ruling Congress's morale and the BJP's efforts to gain ground in these segments ahead of future electoral battles. As nomination deadlines approach, both parties are expected to intensify campaigns focused on community equations, sympathy waves, and local issues.
