K Annamalai Communicates Exit Intentions to BJP High Command, Awaiting Final Decision

Annamalai's future role awaits BJP leadership's final decision.

Former Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai has communicated his views regarding a possible resignation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the party’s top leadership during a meeting in New Delhi, according to sources. The discussions took place on Tuesday and involved BJP National President Nitin Nabin, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh.

During the meeting, Annamalai reportedly held detailed discussions on the political situation in Tamil Nadu following the 2026 Assembly elections. Sources said he shared his assessment of the factors behind the BJP’s inability to secure significant electoral gains in the state and outlined measures he believes are necessary to strengthen the party’s presence in Tamil Nadu going forward.

According to sources, Annamalai was clear about his position during the discussions and presented the reasons behind his reported decision to step away from the party. The BJP leadership is understood to have assured him that his concerns and proposals would be reviewed, with a response expected either later on Tuesday or by Wednesday morning.

Following the party’s decision, Annamalai is expected to address the media and clarify his future political course. Sources indicated that he may announce whether he intends to remain within the BJP or explore the possibility of launching a new political outfit. However, no official statement has yet been made regarding his next move.

Speculation surrounding Annamalai’s political future has intensified in recent days. Responding to reports and social media discussions suggesting he may leave the BJP and start a new party, Annamalai recently urged supporters and observers to wait for a formal announcement. Meanwhile, posters carrying messages such as “Our Leader, Come and Lead Us” have appeared across parts of Coimbatore ahead of his birthday on June 4, further fueling speculation.

The developments come amid a significant political realignment in Tamil Nadu following the 2026 Assembly elections. The elections saw actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) secure 108 seats in its maiden contest, ending the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK-led political blocs. Vijay subsequently took oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and assumed office at the Secretariat in Chennai, marking a new chapter in the state’s political landscape.
