BJP Attacks TVK Govt as Boy Killed Near Madurai’s Meenakshi Temple

16-year-old boy murdered near Madurai’s Meenakshi Temple as BJP criticizes TVK government.

Madurai in Tamil Nadu was shaken by the murder of a 16-year-old boy by a gang of five in the car parking area of the historic Meenakshi Amman Temple on Sunday night. According to police investigations, the incident stemmed from an old enmity linked to a clash that occurred during the recently concluded Chithirai festival. The case has raised serious concerns about deteriorating law and order in the state, coming just days after the brutal kidnapping, sexual assault, and murder of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur in Coimbatore district. These back-to-back violent crimes have triggered sharp political reactions across Tamil Nadu’s political spectrum.

Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai strongly criticized the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government led by actor Vijay. Annamalai stated that the TVK administration remains in celebratory mode and has failed to address the grim realities on the ground. In a post on X, he remarked that drug peddlers, sexual assaulters, and murderers appear to have a free pass in the state. He accused the police of learning no lessons from past incidents and urged the new government to confront rising crime effectively instead of remaining in a post-election festive mood.

DMK spokesperson A Sarvanan also targeted the TVK government, pointing out the stark contrast between its pre-election promises and the current ground situation. He highlighted that two days earlier a 10-year-old girl was assaulted and killed in Sulur, with two more persons murdered in separate incidents, bringing the death count to six or seven in just the last few days. Sarvanan described the TVK leadership as clueless and questioned their ability to deliver on the change they had promised to voters, especially on improving law and order.

The spokesperson recalled that Chief Minister Vijay had campaigned vigorously on the issue of deteriorating law and order in Tamil Nadu. Vijay had urged the youth to vote for him with the assurance that he would bring about positive change. Sarvanan criticized the new government for issuing statements without engaging directly with the public or the press. He emphasized that the leadership has not come forward to meet people and explain the steps being taken to restore safety in the state.

The twin incidents have intensified the political discourse in Tamil Nadu, with opposition parties questioning the effectiveness of the new dispensation. The Meenakshi Temple murder, occurring in a high-security religious location, has particularly alarmed residents and devotees. Police have initiated investigations into both cases, but the swift occurrence of these crimes has fuelled public anxiety about personal safety across the state.

The recent political realignment in Tamil Nadu following the 2026 Assembly elections had brought high expectations for improved governance. However, these violent episodes have quickly shifted focus to law and order challenges. As the TVK government completes its initial days in power, it faces mounting pressure from opposition voices to demonstrate concrete action in tackling crime and ensuring public safety. Authorities continue to investigate the cases while monitoring the overall security situation in the region.
