DMK Attacks Congress for Backing TVK; Five-Seat Party Accused of Alliance Betrayal in Tamil Nadu

DMK calls Congress backstabbers for supporting TVK; alliance fractures amid Tamil Nadu government formation.

The political situation in Tamil Nadu has taken a dramatic turn after a sharp fallout between long-time allies Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Indian National Congress following Congress’s decision to support actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, in forming the government. The move comes after a fractured mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections, where TVK emerged as the single largest party but fell short of a majority, making coalition support crucial.

The DMK, led by M. K. Stalin, reacted strongly to Congress’s shift, with party leaders publicly calling the move a betrayal. Spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai described Congress as "backstabbers", highlighting the depth of the rift. The two parties had shared a strong alliance for nearly two decades, including a sweeping victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, making this sudden split politically significant and unexpected.

Congress, however, has defended its decision by framing it as a response to the people’s mandate. Senior leader K. C. Venugopal stated that the party aims to support a “secular government” and prevent rivals from gaining power. Despite holding just five seats, Congress’s backing could prove decisive in government formation, especially in a tightly contested assembly where smaller numbers can influence outcomes.

Meanwhile, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is also facing internal divisions over whether to support TVK. With 43 seats, AIADMK holds the potential to play kingmaker, but conflicting views within the party have complicated its stance. Reports suggest that national-level political strategies, including influence from the Bharatiya Janata Party, may be shaping these decisions behind the scenes.

With TVK needing additional support to cross the majority mark, the coming days are critical. The final government formation will depend on how alliances settle, whether Congress formalises its break with DMK, and how AIADMK positions itself. What is clear is that Tamil Nadu’s political landscape is undergoing a major realignment, with long-standing partnerships breaking and new power equations emerging rapidly.
