JNUSU Election 2025 Voting Ends with Strong Turnout; Results on November 6

JNU students vote enthusiastically to elect new student leaders; counting begins tonight, results expected November 6.

Voting for the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections concluded at around 5:30 pm on Tuesday, marking the culmination of an energetic polling day across campus. Polling began at 9 am and continued through the day with a break between 1 pm and 2:30 pm, drawing long queues of students eager to exercise their franchise. This year, approximately 9,043 students were eligible to vote.

A total of 20 candidates are contesting for the four key central panel posts — president, vice-president, general secretary, and joint secretary. The elections are predominantly a contest between the Left Unity alliance, which consists of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF), and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which is backed by the RSS. The Left Unity has fielded Aditi Mishra (president), Kizhakoot Gopika Babu (vice-president), Sunil Yadav (general secretary), and Danish Ali (joint secretary). The ABVP candidates include Vikas Patel (president), Tanya Kumari (vice-president), Rajeshwar Kant Dubey (general secretary), and Anuj (joint secretary).

ABVP’s campaign revolved around themes of “performance and nationalism,” while the Left alliance focused on inclusion, accessibility, and student welfare. Women made a strong showing with about 30% of central panel nominations and 25% of school councillor nominations represented by female candidates, signalling growing gender representation on campus.

The previous year’s elections saw Left-backed groups capture three of the four central posts, with ABVP breaking a decade-long dry spell by winning the joint secretary position. This historic shift amplified political competition on campus, and Tuesday's election day was viewed as another pivotal moment in JNU’s political landscape. Counting of votes will start at 9 pm tonight, with final results anticipated on November 6.

As the students await the outcomes, the JNUSU elections continue to mirror national ideological contests, spotlighting the significance of student voices in shaping academic and political discourse within one of India’s premier educational institutions.
