Himanta Wins Sixth Term as NDA Secures Majority in Assam With 70 Seats

Himanta wins sixth consecutive term; NDA secures 70-seat majority in Assam.

Himanta Biswa Sarma secured a decisive victory from the Jalukbari for a record sixth consecutive term, defeating Congress candidate Bidisha Neog by a margin of 89,434 votes, according to Election Commission data. The result further strengthened the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance’s dominance in the state.

The overall outcome of the Assam Assembly elections also confirmed a strong performance by the National Democratic Alliance, which secured a clear majority in the 126-member House. The ruling coalition crossed the halfway mark of 68 seats, with early trends and final tallies indicating a consolidated mandate in favour of the alliance.

According to official figures, the NDA secured a total of 70 seats. Within the alliance, the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 58 seats, while its regional partners also contributed to the majority. The Asom Gana Parishad won 5 seats, and the Bodo Peoples' Front secured 7 seats, reflecting a coordinated alliance performance across constituencies.

In addition, alliance candidates were also leading in several other constituencies at different stages of counting, further reinforcing the NDA’s strong electoral presence in the state. The combined performance of the BJP and its allies highlighted effective seat-sharing arrangements and sustained voter support across both urban and rural regions of Assam.

Following the results, Sarma also commented on the political landscape, stating that the opposition’s representation in the Assembly would see limited diversity. His remarks came amid celebrations within the NDA camp over what is being described as a “decisive mandate” in the state elections.

The election outcome is being viewed as a significant endorsement of the NDA’s governance model in Assam, with the alliance maintaining its grip on power while expanding its legislative strength. The results are expected to shape the political direction of the state in the coming years, particularly in terms of development priorities and regional alliance dynamics.
