Kerala Congress Chief Ganesh Kumar Faces Shock Defeat Ending 25-Year Winning Streak
Kerala Congress chief Ganesh Kumar faces a shock defeat, ending a 25-year winning streak.
K B Ganesh Kumar is facing a surprising electoral setback in Pathanapuram, with early counting trends showing him trailing after a political stronghold spanning over 25 years. The veteran politician and actor, known for his consistent electoral victories, is currently behind his rival in the ongoing Kerala Assembly election count.
According to Election Commission trends, Ganesh Kumar is trailing Congress candidate Jyothikumar Chamakkala by more than 5,000 votes. This marks a significant reversal from the 2021 Assembly elections, when Kumar had won the seat with a margin of nearly 15,000 votes, reinforcing his long-standing dominance in the constituency.
Chamakkala’s performance is being attributed to sustained ground-level campaigning over the past five years, which appears to have strengthened his connect with voters in Pathanapuram. Political observers note that consistent constituency engagement played a key role in shifting voter sentiment in a seat previously considered a stronghold of Kumar.

Kerala Congress (B), led by Ganesh Kumar, had aligned with the Left Democratic Front (LDF) ahead of the 2021 elections following internal political realignments within the party. The shift was led after the passing of party founder R Balakrishna Pillai, with Kumar taking over leadership responsibilities.
The current election has also seen political controversies influence the campaign atmosphere, including allegations raised by Congress leaders related to past cases involving Kumar. While these issues were part of the broader political narrative, Kumar had expressed confidence during campaigning that he would retain the seat with a record margin.
The Kerala Assembly election remains a closely watched contest, with the ruling LDF seeking an uncommon third consecutive term, while the Congress-led UDF aims for a return to power after nearly a decade. As counting progresses, the outcome in Pathanapuram is being seen as a significant indicator of shifting political dynamics in the state.
