Himanta Biswa Sarma Predicts BJP Victory In Upcoming West Bengal Polls

Assam CM says BJP will form West Bengal government confidently.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday made a strong political assertion while campaigning for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that the party is certain to form the next government in West Bengal as the state heads into Assembly elections.

Addressing the media in Gourbazar, CM Sarma expressed confidence in the BJP’s electoral prospects in the state. He said, “This time BJP is going to form a government, 100 per cent confirmed,” reinforcing the party’s campaign narrative as it seeks to expand its political footprint in West Bengal.

West Bengal is scheduled to hold its 294-seat Assembly elections in two phases this year. The first phase of polling will take place on April 23 across 152 constituencies spread over 16 districts, followed by the second phase on April 29 covering the remaining 142 constituencies in seven districts. Vote counting is set to be conducted on May 4.

The two-phase polling structure marks a shift from previous election cycles in the state, which have often been conducted over multiple phases, including the eight-phase election in 2021. Authorities have attributed the streamlined schedule to improved administrative arrangements and enhanced security planning for the electoral process.

During his visit, Sarma also commented on national political developments, including the rejection of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha. Referring to the bill’s failure to secure the required two-thirds majority, he said that women voters were “very sad” and suggested they would hold opposition parties accountable, naming the Trinamool Congress, DMK, and Congress in his remarks. The bill, related to women’s reservation in legislatures, saw 298 MPs vote in favour and 230 against, while related legislative proposals were not taken up for voting after the setback.
