Harvard MBA, 400 Rejections, 90-Day Visa Clock: Indian Graduate Finally Lands Google Job
The Indian Harvard MBA secured a Google role after months of rejections and visa pressure.
An Indian-origin Harvard Business School graduate has shared a striking account of his difficult job search journey in the United States, highlighting how even elite academic credentials do not guarantee immediate employment. After graduating in 2024 without a full-time job offer, he faced mounting pressure, financial uncertainty, and a strict 90-day visa deadline to secure employment or leave the country.
The individual, identified as Abhijay Vuyyuru, said in an as-told-to essay that he left a well-established career in Europe to pursue an MBA at Harvard Business School. However, upon graduation, he encountered an unexpectedly competitive job market. Despite his prestigious degree, he struggled to convert applications into offers and faced more than 400 rejections during his search.
Vuyyuru noted that his initial strategy of relying on online job applications proved ineffective in a saturated hiring environment. Realizing the need for a different approach, he shifted to direct outreach, contacting hiring managers and industry professionals. This change in strategy eventually helped him secure an internship at Apple, which provided him with experience and expanded his professional network, though it did not immediately lead to a permanent role.

As his visa deadline approached, he accepted a short-term internship at a private equity firm to maintain his legal status in the United States. The role offered temporary stability and allowed him more time to continue pursuing long-term opportunities while staying within immigration requirements.
The breakthrough came when a Harvard classmate referred him for an opening in Google’s YouTube division. After progressing through multiple rounds of interviews, he eventually secured the position and joined Google roughly six months after graduating. The role marked a major turning point after months of uncertainty and repeated rejections.
His experience highlights broader challenges faced by international graduates navigating highly competitive global job markets, where even elite qualifications may not guarantee immediate employment. The story underscores the importance of persistence, networking, and adaptability, particularly for candidates balancing career ambitions with strict immigration timelines.
