Gehlot Debate Revives High Command Dispute Within Rajasthan Congress

Fresh signs of factionalism have emerged within the Rajasthan Congress after senior leader Shanti Dhariwal referred to former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot as the party's "high command" in the state, reigniting a long-running debate over the party's leadership ahead of the upcoming panchayat and urban local body elections. The remarks have triggered contrasting reactions from senior Congress leaders, exposing internal differences over authority and organisational control in the state unit.
The controversy unfolded alongside a Congress meeting in Jaipur convened to discuss preparations for the local body polls. The gathering witnessed visible displays of factional loyalty, with supporters raising slogans in favour of individual leaders despite repeated appeals from party functionaries to focus on the organisation. Jaipur District Congress President Sunil Sharma, Congress MLA Rafiq Khan and Rajasthan Congress President Govind Singh Dotasra urged workers to refrain from personality-centric slogan shouting and instead rally behind the party and its national leadership.
The meeting also saw several leaders publicly air grievances over alleged internal sabotage during previous elections. Former Malviya Nagar Assembly candidate Archana Sharma claimed that her biggest challenge during the Assembly polls came from within the Congress rather than the BJP, alleging that efforts to undermine her candidature had begun months before the election. Former Hawa Mahal candidate R.R. Tiwari echoed similar concerns, attributing his defeat to party insiders while backing Dhariwal's assertion that Gehlot remains the most influential leader in Rajasthan because of his organisational network and political experience.

Dhariwal's comments were, however, rejected by former minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, who maintained that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alone constitutes the party's high command. Ashok Gehlot himself distanced himself from the debate, saying leadership decisions rest entirely with the Congress high command in Delhi. He stated that the central leadership continuously monitors political developments through surveys, organisational feedback and consultations before taking decisions on party matters, including candidate selection.
The renewed leadership debate comes as the Congress prepares for key municipal corporation and panchayat elections in Rajasthan while continuing to grapple with internal divisions, including the long-standing Gehlot-Sachin Pilot rivalry. With former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot absent from recent party protests and state in-charge Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa also missing from organisational activities, speculation over coordination within the state unit has intensified. Although Gehlot has expressed confidence that the Congress will return to power in the next Assembly elections, the latest controversy has once again highlighted the party's challenge of balancing competing power centres as it gears up for crucial electoral contests.
