Ex-Army General Syed Ata Hasnain sworn in as Bihar Governor, pledges focus on welfare and democratic values.

Lieutenant General (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain on Saturday took oath as the new Governor of Bihar at Lok Bhavan, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for entrusting him with the responsibility. Addressing the media shortly after the ceremony, Hasnain described the appointment as a great honour and reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of the state’s people.

“I’m honoured that the Prime Minister nominated me to be the Governor of such an important state as Bihar. My whole focus will be on being committed to the people of Bihar,” Hasnain said, highlighting his dedication to democratic values and people-centric governance. He also drew parallels with his previous service in Jammu and Kashmir, where he was popularly known as the “People’s General.”

Hasnain arrived in Patna on Thursday and was welcomed by senior administrative officials at the airport. His appointment has been noted as significant in both political and administrative circles, reflecting the government’s emphasis on experienced leadership for Bihar.

Before assuming the gubernatorial role, Hasnain served nearly 40 years in the Indian Army, holding key posts and managing complex security challenges, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir. Known for his strategic acumen and humanitarian approach, he earned wide respect among defence experts, policymakers, and security officials.

Beyond his military career, Hasnain has been involved in numerous social initiatives, particularly in education, sports, and youth employment. These programs aimed to connect youth with the national mainstream and encourage positive community development.

Observers say his combination of strategic leadership, administrative experience, and focus on people-centric governance could bring a fresh perspective to Bihar’s administration, enhancing both development and citizen engagement.
