Digvijaya Singh Triggers Congress Row As Fact-Check Draws Unusual BJP Appreciation Publicly
Digvijaya Singh's remarks trigger Congress turmoil, BJP praise.
Senior Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh has found himself at the centre of a political controversy after remarks described as a "fact-check" triggered criticism from within the Congress while drawing rare praise from leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The unusual political crossover has sparked fresh debate over Singh's position within the party and prompted sharp exchanges between Congress and BJP leaders.
The latest development came when BJP MLA Pritam Lodhi publicly praised Digvijaya Singh and suggested that the veteran Congress leader would receive greater respect if he joined the BJP. Describing Singh as a "good elderly man" who helps everyone, Lodhi claimed that despite dedicating decades to the Congress, the party's leadership had failed to give him the recognition he deserved. He added that if Singh were to switch sides, the BJP would treat him "like royalty."
The BJP leader's remarks came at a time when Digvijaya Singh has been facing criticism from sections of his own party. While the exact comments that triggered the internal backlash have fuelled political debate, the episode has highlighted apparent differences within the Congress over the veteran leader's recent interventions. Singh, who has long been one of the BJP's most vocal critics, has frequently been at the centre of political controversies during his decades-long career.

Responding to Lodhi's remarks, Congress leader Ravi Saxena firmly dismissed any speculation about Singh leaving the party. He said Digvijaya Singh's "DNA is rooted in the Congress" and described him as a loyal party worker who has consistently stood by the organisation through difficult periods. Saxena also argued that Singh remains one of the Congress's strongest leaders in Madhya Pradesh and claimed that his political influence has often unsettled the BJP.
Saxena further advised the BJP not to entertain hopes of attracting the former chief minister into its ranks, insisting that Singh's commitment to the Congress remained unwavering. His response underscored the Congress's attempt to project unity despite the criticism Singh has reportedly faced from within sections of the party following his recent remarks.
The episode has nevertheless created an unusual political spectacle, with a leader who has historically been one of the BJP's fiercest opponents receiving public appreciation from ruling party leaders while simultaneously facing criticism from colleagues within the Congress. Although there is no indication that Digvijaya Singh is considering leaving the Congress, the contrasting reactions have drawn attention to the evolving political dynamics in Madhya Pradesh and the challenges facing both major parties as they navigate internal differences and electoral politics.
