Congress Factionalism Explodes Into Public View as Leaders Clash on Camera
Congress factionalism erupts publicly after Meenakshi Natarajan Rajya Sabha rejection.
The rejection of Meenakshi Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha nomination has triggered fresh political controversy within the Congress party in Madhya Pradesh, exposing what critics describe as internal factional tensions. What initially appeared to be a legal and electoral setback on June 9 has now escalated into a broader political embarrassment for the party, drawing attention to its internal leadership dynamics.
The issue gained further traction after a video from a recent Congress press conference went viral on social media. The clip showed former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh, state Congress president Jitu Patwari, and state in-charge Harish Chaudhary sharing the stage. During the interaction, Jitu Patwari was seen requesting Digvijaya Singh to shift from his seat, after which the veteran leader moved to a side chair. Moments later, Patwari is heard asking him to remain in his position, but Singh had already relocated, while Chaudhary and Meenakshi Natarajan were subsequently seated nearby.
The incident quickly sparked political commentary and was widely circulated online, with opposition leaders highlighting it as evidence of visible discomfort within the party’s state leadership. The BJP, in particular, seized on the video, using it to reinforce its narrative of internal discord within the Congress.

BJP state president Hemant Khandelwal criticised the episode, suggesting it reflected confusion and lack of coordination within the opposition party. The Congress, however, has not issued an official detailed response on the matter, and party leaders have largely remained silent on the controversy surrounding the seating arrangement and the viral clip.
The episode has added to the perception of factionalism within the Madhya Pradesh Congress unit at a time when the party is attempting to strengthen its organisational structure. Political observers suggest that such public displays, whether intentional or not, could further complicate efforts to present a unified front ahead of future electoral challenges.
