Congress Withdraws Candidate In Baramati, Sunetra Pawar Likely To Win Unopposed
Congress withdrawal paves way for Sunetra Pawar’s unopposed Baramati win.
Sunetra Pawar is set to secure an unopposed victory in the Baramati Assembly bypoll after the Congress announced the withdrawal of its candidate, significantly altering the political dynamics in the constituency. The Congress decision came just hours before the deadline for withdrawal of nominations, effectively clearing the path for Pawar, the candidate of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The party had earlier fielded a nominee but reversed its stance, citing political considerations and respect for the legacy of the late Ajit Pawar.
The bypoll was necessitated following the death of Ajit Pawar in a plane crash earlier this year, leaving the Baramati seat vacant. Sunetra Pawar, his widow, entered the fray as the NCP’s candidate and quickly emerged as the frontrunner, backed by strong political support and appeals for a consensus-driven election.
Senior leaders, including Sharad Pawar and other party figures, had urged rival parties to allow an uncontested election as a mark of respect. The move was framed as consistent with past political conventions in certain cases where bypolls follow the death of a sitting leader.

While the Congress had initially resisted these calls and even fielded a candidate, the eventual withdrawal signals a strategic shift and an attempt to maintain broader political understanding within the state. However, despite the Congress exit, several Independent candidates remain in the fray, and efforts are reportedly underway to persuade them to step aside as well.
If no other candidates remain by the close of the withdrawal window, Sunetra Pawar’s election would be uncontested, marking a significant political moment in Baramati—a constituency long associated with the Pawar family’s influence. The development also underscores the interplay of electoral strategy, legacy politics, and alliance dynamics in Maharashtra’s evolving political landscape.
