Congress Targets Seventh MLC Seat Amid Tight Legislative Council Arithmetic

Congress intensifies push for seventh MLC seat contest

The contest for Karnataka’s Legislative Council has intensified as the ruling Congress seeks to secure an additional seat in the upcoming elections, with political manoeuvring and last-minute calculations shaping a closely watched battle in Bengaluru. According to party insiders, the Congress is attempting to consolidate support beyond its declared strength and is now eyeing a seventh seat in the Council polls. The effort comes amid reports that the party has already secured enough backing to comfortably win at least five seats, while continuing negotiations to push its tally further.

Sources within the political establishment claim that Congress strategists have, over the past few days, engaged in back-channel efforts to secure the support of a small group of disgruntled legislators from the opposition bloc. These discussions are said to include possibilities of cross-voting, abstentions, or invalid votes that could influence the final outcome in a closely contested race. The Legislative Council elections, which are conducted through a secret ballot, have heightened the uncertainty around voting patterns.

Political parties have responded by moving their legislators to secure locations, commonly referred to as resorts, where closed-door briefings, mock voting exercises, and strategy sessions are being held to prevent last-minute defections or pressure from rival camps. The ruling Congress party, which governs Karnataka, is reportedly confident of maintaining its lead in the initial allocation of seats and believes that preference vote transfers could help it edge closer to an additional win. Party leaders have, however, refrained from making public claims, citing the unpredictable nature of the electoral process and the secrecy of the ballot.

Meanwhile, opposition groups, including the Janata Dal (Secular) and allies of the National Democratic Alliance in the state, are working to ensure internal cohesion and prevent any erosion of support. Party strategists are focusing on maintaining discipline among their limited but strategically important number of legislators. With all parties avoiding official confirmation of internal arrangements, the final outcome remains uncertain.

Political observers note that the race for the seventh seat could become a decisive indicator of the strength of party organisation, internal loyalty, and the effectiveness of last-minute political negotiations in Karnataka’s complex legislative landscape. The results are expected to offer insights into emerging fault lines within state politics, particularly in the ongoing competition between the Congress and the opposition bloc, as both sides attempt to assert dominance in the Legislative Council.
