Hooda's Statement On Amarinder Singh Fuels Fresh Speculation Of Congress Re-Entry
Hooda's remark on Amarinder Singh triggers fresh Congress crossover speculation.
Speculation over former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh’s political future has resurfaced after remarks by former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda suggested that the senior leader remains in contact with Congress figures. Hooda’s comments have triggered fresh buzz about a possible political realignment ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections next year.
Speaking to reporters, Hooda referred to Amarinder Singh as a senior Congress leader and long-time associate, highlighting their shared political history. His statement has been interpreted in political circles as an indication that informal communication channels between Amarinder and the Congress leadership may still be active.
The remarks have reignited discussions about whether efforts are underway to facilitate Amarinder Singh’s return to the Congress, from which he exited in 2021 before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The speculation gains further traction amid reports of growing unease within his current political positioning. Since joining the BJP, Amarinder Singh has occasionally expressed dissatisfaction with aspects of the party’s internal functioning.

He has drawn comparisons between the organisational structures of the Congress and the BJP, suggesting that decision-making in the latter is more centralised and less consultative. He has also publicly noted the absence of personal outreach from senior BJP leadership, contrasting it with what he described as more consistent engagement from Congress leaders in the past. Recently, he mentioned receiving birthday wishes and a condolence message from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, gestures he said were not mirrored by his current party.
These comments have fuelled speculation within political circles that Amarinder Singh may be reconsidering his position, although no formal indication of a shift has been made. Adding to the political chatter, some Congress leaders in Punjab, including former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, have indicated that Amarinder would be welcome back into the party if he chooses to return. However, the BJP has dismissed such speculation, stating that routine contact between political leaders should not be interpreted as evidence of negotiations or defections.
Amarinder Singh has also voiced differences over BJP’s organisational and electoral strategy in Punjab, particularly regarding leadership appointments and the party’s decision to contest all 117 Assembly seats independently. He has advocated in the past for a potential alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal, a position not aligned with the BJP’s current stance. While political speculation continues to grow, Amarinder Singh’s family members have largely avoided public commentary on the issue, reflecting a cautious approach amid ongoing political uncertainty.
