Congress Targets BJP Failures, Moves No-Confidence Motion
Congress launches no-confidence motion against Odisha's BJP government.
The opposition Congress party in Odisha announced on Wednesday its intent to file a no-confidence motion against the BJP-led state government during the upcoming monsoon session of the Odisha Assembly, set to commence on Thursday. This bold move signals deepening dissatisfaction with the ruling administration's handling of critical state issues, potentially shaking up the legislative agenda.
CLP leader Rama Chandra Kadam, speaking to the media after a key meeting of Congress MLAs, lambasted the government for its perceived failures. "The state government has utterly failed to address pressing concerns like women's safety, law and order, farmers' woes, and the struggles of Dalits, tribals, and OBCs," Kadam declared. He accused the BJP of being all talk and no action, transforming into a regime of "empty rhetoric" that has betrayed public trust and fallen short of electoral promises.
Kadam outlined a barrage of issues the Congress plans to spotlight in the assembly, including rampant atrocities against women, soaring unemployment rates, forced evictions under the guise of industrial development, fertilizer shortages and black marketing, dilutions to the SC/ST Act, and more. The party highlighted recent violent incidents in areas like Gopalpur, Balasore, Balanga, and Brahmagiri, as well as the horrific murder of women traffic constable Subhamitra Sahoo by a colleague in Bhubaneswar. Questioning Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi's dual role as Home Minister, they demanded accountability from the Commissionerate police for their inefficiency.

OPCC president Bhakta Charan Das emphasized the breadth of the opposition's grievances, from the fertilizer and farmers' crises to corruption, educational neglect, unsafe drinking water, and the government's reluctance to hold students' union elections. Earlier, Das had urged the BJD—the state's principal opposition—to join forces in tabling the motion. With Congress holding 14 MLAs in the 147-member assembly, this challenge could test alliances and expose fractures in Odisha's political landscape as the session unfolds.
