Congress Escalates Attack On Bhupender Yadav, Cites 'Smoke Without Fire' Amid Political Dispute

Congress questions Bhupender Yadav amid fresh political controversy.

The Congress on Tuesday criticised the Centre following the removal of four officials from the office of Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, questioning the circumstances surrounding the action and asking whether there could be "so much smoke without any fire." The opposition's remarks came after the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change relieved the minister's private secretary and three additional secretaries of their duties through separate office orders.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh described the development as "shocking" and took a swipe at the government over the appointments and subsequent removal of the officials. In a post on X, he suggested that the episode raised questions about the functioning of the government and referred to what the Congress has previously described as the "Pradhan Mantri Chanda Do Dhandha Lo" scheme. "It is no secret how such appointments are made in the first place during the Modi regime. Can there be so much smoke without any fire? Could this be an instance of the Pradhan Mantri Chanda Do Dhandha Lo scheme having gone awry?" Ramesh wrote.

The controversy follows administrative changes initiated by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. According to official records, the ministry issued three separate office orders on July 3 directing that the minister's private secretary and three additional secretaries be relieved of their responsibilities in Bhupender Yadav's office. The ministry has not publicly detailed the reasons behind the personnel changes.

The Congress has sought greater clarity from the government regarding the removals, arguing that the abrupt changes warrant an explanation. The opposition maintained that transparency is necessary in matters involving senior ministerial staff and questioned whether the action pointed to broader administrative concerns. However, the party did not provide any evidence to support its allegations beyond raising political questions over the developments.

The government has not issued any official response to the Congress's remarks or the allegations made by Jairam Ramesh. Similarly, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has not publicly elaborated on the rationale behind the transfers or relief of the four officials. As of now, the matter remains an administrative decision, with political debate continuing over the circumstances surrounding the changes in the minister's office.
