Internal Differences Emerge In Kerala Congress Over CM Satheesan’s Administrative Influence
Factional tensions emerge in Kerala Congress leadership structure.
The ruling Congress party in Kerala is witnessing a fresh surge of internal factional tensions, with growing dissatisfaction within the K.C. Venugopal-aligned group over Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan’s style of governance and decision-making approach. The developments have triggered calls for an urgent meeting of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) to address concerns raised during the recently concluded Assembly session.
According to party sources, leaders aligned with AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal have alleged that several key policy and administrative decisions are being taken by the state government without adequate consultation with party forums. The faction has reportedly sought immediate organisational discussions to review the functioning of the government and the communication gap between the leadership and the party structure.
The internal dynamics of the Congress in Kerala have long been shaped by competing power centres, and the current situation is seen as a continuation of that trend. The main lines of influence are currently divided between Chief Minister Satheesan and K.C. Venugopal, while senior leader Ramesh Chennithala continues to maintain an independent support base within the organisation. Political observers note that these rivalries have periodically influenced both party strategy and governance decisions.

The present tension is also linked to recent administrative and policy decisions, including appointments such as the State Election Commissioner and the Devaswom Pleader, as well as a controversial Finance Bill provision related to low-alcohol beverages. Sections within the party have alleged that these decisions were made without prior discussion in organisational platforms, a charge that has added to internal unease.
Sources indicate that dissatisfaction is further deepened by concerns over upcoming organisational appointments, including the selection of a new KPCC President and posts in state-run boards and corporations. With the current KPCC leadership partially integrated into the state Cabinet, the party is reportedly operating without a full-time organisational head, intensifying factional competition over influence and control.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Satheesan is understood to have taken a firm stand against what he describes as unnecessary interference in the day-to-day functioning of the government. His position has reportedly widened the divide within the party, setting the stage for a potentially contentious KPCC leadership meeting in the coming days as both sides seek to assert their influence over the party’s direction in the state.
