Congress Denounces Kerala Govt Over CAA Cases
Kerala’s Unkept Promise on CAA Protests
The Congress party in Kerala sharply criticized the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government for failing to withdraw cases against its workers who protested the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in 2019, accusing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of “double standards.” The remarks come as fresh court summons were issued to protesters, reigniting tensions over unfulfilled assurances.
Congress MLA from Kalpetta, T Siddique, highlighted that Vijayan had publicly promised to drop cases against CAA protesters and declared that the amended Act would not be implemented in Kerala. “However, the cases were not withdrawn, and now notices have been issued to appear in court,” Siddique stated, pointing to the government’s failure to honor its commitments. He recalled his own arrest, alongside 55 others, during the protests when he led the Kozhikode District Congress Committee, enduring four days in jail.
Sali Rattakkolly, another protester, echoed Siddique’s sentiments, noting that he received a summons in June 2025 to appear before the Kalpetta Judicial Magistrate on August 29 at 11 AM. The case stems from a December 21, 2019, protest by 14 Congress workers in front of the Wayanad Collectorate, where police filed charges for unlawful assembly and public disturbance.

Siddique further criticized the LDF for not withdrawing cases related to other protests, including those against women’s entry into Sabarimala, despite similar assurances. The Congress alleges that the government’s inaction reflects a pattern of selective enforcement, undermining democratic rights. With Kerala’s political landscape heating up, this issue could fuel further opposition campaigns, drawing parallels to national debates on electoral integrity seen in initiatives like the Voter Adhikar Yatra.
