Congress Criticizes PM Modi’s Manipur Visit as Inadequate
Congress criticizes PM Modi’s brief Manipur visit as inadequate amid ongoing ethnic tensions.
The Congress party has sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Manipur on September 13, branding it a “farce” that fails to address the state’s deep-seated ethnic violence and displacement crisis. The visit, Modi’s first to Manipur since ethnic clashes erupted in May 2023, comes after 29 months of turmoil that has claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands in conflicts between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X, condemned the brevity of the Prime Minister’s trip, noting that Modi will spend less than three hours in the state. “This visit, instead of providing a force for peace and harmony, is actually going to be a farce,” Ramesh stated, echoing earlier party claims that the rushed visit is an “insult” to Manipur’s people, who have endured prolonged suffering. Last week, Congress described the trip as “too little, too late,” questioning Modi’s commitment to addressing the crisis.
According to Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Modi will visit Churachandpur and Imphal to interact with internally displaced persons and unveil development projects worth ₹8,500 crore. The Prime Minister’s Office detailed that Modi will lay the foundation stone for projects valued at over ₹7,300 crore in Churachandpur and inaugurate initiatives worth more than ₹1,200 crore in Imphal, emphasizing inclusive and sustainable development for the state.

Manipur remains under President’s rule following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, with the state assembly, set to continue until 2027, currently in suspended animation. The Congress’s sharp critique underscores the political tensions surrounding Modi’s visit, with the opposition arguing that the brief engagement fails to match the scale of Manipur’s ongoing humanitarian and social challenges.
