PM Modi to visit Assam for Bhupen Hazarika tribute and ₹19,000 crore projects.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day visit to Assam starting Saturday to pay tribute to Bharat Ratna awardee Bhupen Hazarika and launch development projects worth over ₹19,000 crore, officials announced. The visit underscores the government’s commitment to honoring cultural icons and advancing infrastructure and healthcare in the state.

On Saturday, arriving in Guwahati at 4:20 PM, the Prime Minister will attend an event marking the birth centenary of the legendary singer and cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika at 5:15 PM. The celebrations will feature the release of a ₹100 commemorative coin and a biography titled Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika. A highlight of the event will be an 18-minute musical tribute by 1,200 artists performing a medley of 14 of Hazarika’s timeless songs. The Prime Minister will spend the night at a state guest house in Guwahati.

On Sunday, Modi will travel to Mangaldoi in Darrang district to lay the foundation stone for the Darrang Medical College, along with a nursing and General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) school, with a combined investment of ₹567 crore. These healthcare initiatives aim to bolster medical education and services in the region. Additionally, he will lay the foundation for the Narengi-Kuruwa bridge and the Guwahati Ring Road project, connecting Kamrup and Darrang districts in Assam with Ri Bhoi in Meghalaya, at an estimated cost of ₹7,000 crore.

The Prime Minister will then proceed to Numaligarh in Golaghat district to inaugurate a ₹5,000 crore bamboo-based ethanol plant at the Numaligarh Refinery. He will also lay the foundation stone for a ₹7,000 crore Petro Fluidised Catalytic Cracker Unit, designed to produce 360 KTPA of propylene, significantly enhancing the plastic value chain. A public rally at the Numaligarh Tanker Stand will follow, where Modi is expected to address the public.

In preparation for the visit, a “PM Neem Corridor” featuring neem trees along a 2.2-km stretch to the Numaligarh rally venue has been established to honor the Prime Minister. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who planted a sapling at the site on Thursday, chaired a high-level meeting with cabinet ministers, MLAs, and senior officials to ensure seamless execution of the events and robust security arrangements. The Chief Minister’s Office emphasized the state’s commitment to making the visit and Hazarika’s centenary celebrations a success.

Modi will depart for Kolkata from Jorhat airport on Sunday evening, concluding his visit, which blends cultural reverence with significant developmental milestones for Assam.
