CM V.D. Satheesan Chairs First Cabinet Meeting After Taking Oath In Kerala
New Kerala government assumed office as Satheesan chaired maiden Cabinet meeting.
Heavy rain and stormy weather failed to deter thousands of supporters who gathered in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday to welcome the new Kerala government led by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) formally assumed office after a decade out of power, marking a significant political transition in the state. The atmosphere outside government offices remained celebratory despite torrential rainfall, with supporters chanting slogans and cheering the return of the UDF administration.
Soon after the swearing-in ceremony, Satheesan and his 21-member cabinet proceeded to Lok Bhavan for the customary tea reception hosted by Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. Ministers exchanged greetings and prepared for their first official engagements as members of the new administration. However, by the time the cabinet members began heading toward the North Block of the State Secretariat for the inaugural cabinet meeting, heavy rain had engulfed the capital city.
Despite the adverse weather conditions, a large crowd continued to wait outside the Secretariat premises to witness the beginning of the new government’s tenure. Many among those gathered included UDF supporters, Secretariat employees aligned with the coalition, party workers, and residents eager to participate in the occasion. Security personnel faced difficulty managing the swelling crowd as ministers entered the Secretariat amid loud chants welcoming Satheesan and his cabinet to power.

Upon arriving at the Secretariat, Satheesan entered the Chief Minister’s office and formally assumed charge by signing the first official files, symbolising the transfer of administrative authority. Cabinet ministers gradually assembled in the adjacent cabinet meeting hall as the new Chief Minister completed the formal procedures. Moments later, Satheesan took his seat at the head of the cabinet table, formally commencing the first meeting of the newly elected government.
Political observers and supporters are now closely watching the decisions expected to emerge from the maiden cabinet meeting. Several key policy announcements and welfare initiatives are anticipated in the coming days as the government begins outlining its administrative priorities. The UDF leadership has campaigned extensively on promises related to governance reforms, economic revival, and social welfare, raising expectations among the public regarding immediate action on pressing state issues.
The first cabinet meeting is expected to set the tone for the new administration’s governance style and policy direction over the coming years. Chief Minister Satheesan is scheduled to address the media following the conclusion of the meeting, where he is likely to announce the government’s immediate priorities and provide an overview of the roadmap for the new term. The transition marks a major political moment in Kerala, with the Congress-led alliance returning to power after ten years in opposition.
