Chidambaram Gives Pakistan Clean Chit? BJP Sparks Outrage

Chidambaram’s Remarks Ignite Fierce Debate Ahead of Parliament Session

A fiery political storm has erupted over Congress leader P. Chidambaram’s controversial remarks suggesting that “homegrown terrorists” may have carried out the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people. In an interview with The Quint, the former Home Minister questioned the government’s claim that the attackers were Pakistani nationals, stating, “Have they identified the terrorists? For all we know, they could be homegrown. Why assume they came from Pakistan? There’s no evidence.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swiftly condemned the Congress, accusing it of “giving a clean chit to Pakistan” and undermining national security. BJP leader Amit Malviya, referencing Chidambaram’s past “Saffron Terror” remarks, posted on X: “Once again, Congress rushes to defend Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack. Why do they sound like Islamabad’s lawyers?” He added, “When it comes to national security, Congress always bends over backwards to protect the enemy.”

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla echoed the sentiment, alleging a pattern: “From 26/11 to Surgical Strike to Pahalgam, Congress ka haath, Pakistan ke saath!” The remarks come just hours before a heated parliamentary debate on Operation Sindoor, India’s counterstrike following the attack.

Chidambaram also criticized the government for “hiding losses” during Operation Sindoor and questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence. “In a war, losses are inevitable. Be upfront,” he said, comparing the government’s secrecy to wartime transparency under Winston Churchill. He further noted that the ceasefire was announced by former U.S. President Donald Trump, not India, raising questions about the government’s narrative.

Congress MP Imran Masood defended Chidambaram, accusing the BJP of weakening India by agreeing to the ceasefire. “You stopped the forces and brought India and Pakistan to the same level. The terrorists are still alive—aren’t you ashamed?” he said.

As Parliament prepares for the Operation Sindoor debate, Chidambaram’s remarks are set to fuel intense confrontations on the House floor.
