Goa CM’s Mahadayi Claim Sparks Fury: Bommai Slams Congress and Defends Karnataka’s Water Rights!
BJP leader accuses Goa of politicizing the Mahadayi project, credits BJP for all progress in the contentious river dispute.
Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai fiercely condemned Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s recent claim that the Centre would block Karnataka’s Mahadayi river project, calling it an “insult” to the state’s people. Speaking to reporters in Gadag, Bommai accused Sawant of playing political games and urged him to act lawfully, while also questioning the Congress party’s moral authority on the issue.
Sawant, addressing the Goa Assembly last week, vowed to file a contempt petition against Karnataka in the Supreme Court for alleged attempts to divert Mahadayi river water. Karnataka’s Kalasa-Banduri project aims to channel water to the Malaprabha river, boosting drinking water supply in Dharwad, Belagavi, Bagalkote, and Gadag districts. Goa, however, opposes the diversion, citing environmental concerns for its flora and fauna.
Bommai credited the BJP-led NDA government for all progress on the Mahadayi issue, including securing environmental clearances, preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR), and notifying the tribunal’s verdict—steps he claimed were stalled under Congress. He accused Congress of obstructing canal work during the BJP’s tenure by building barriers to block Mahadayi water. “Congress has no moral right to speak, especially after Sonia Gandhi’s claim during Goa polls that not a drop of Mahadayi water would reach Karnataka,” Bommai charged.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah also slammed the BJP, questioning the Centre’s silence and accusing it of undermining federalism. Amid the escalating water dispute, Bommai also addressed a urea shortage in Karnataka, criticizing the state government’s mismanagement and pledging to secure additional supplies from the Centre while urging better distribution.
