Centre Ready For Full Parliament Debate On Students’ Protest, Rijiju Targets Rahul

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said the Centre is ready for a detailed discussion in Parliament on the ongoing students' protest, offering to go beyond a formal statement and hold a full-fledged debate on the issue. Rijiju also accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of avoiding the proposed discussion, as the Monsoon Session enters its final phase.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament House complex, Rijiju said the government was prepared to hold a discussion lasting an entire day or even two days and respond to all issues raised by the Opposition. He argued that a detailed debate would provide an opportunity to examine different aspects of the students' protest and establish clarity over the events surrounding it.

Rijiju maintained that the government had already made the offer on Monday and had kept its responses ready. He said Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also prepared to participate in the debate and respond to the issues raised by Opposition members. According to Rijiju, however, the Opposition did not allow the proposed discussion to proceed.

The minister again accused the Congress of preventing the debate on Tuesday, alleging that Opposition members raised slogans outside Parliament instead of participating in the discussion. He also referred to demands from NDA MPs that Rahul Gandhi participate in the proposed debate, arguing that the government had demonstrated its willingness to address the students' issue on the floor of the House.

Rijiju urged the Congress to agree to the government's proposal during the remaining days of the Monsoon Session, which is scheduled to conclude on Thursday. The dispute has centred on the Opposition's demand for clarification from the Home Minister over police action during the students' protest, including allegations concerning the use of pellet guns.

Rahul Gandhi had earlier questioned the government's proposed debate, arguing that the Opposition wanted specific answers rather than a discussion on broader issues. The Congress has maintained three key demands, including clarification from Amit Shah on whether he ordered firing on protesting students, and statements from Prime Minister Narendra Modi concerning allegations related to Ram Temple donations. The party has described these demands as non-negotiable, setting the stage for continued confrontation between the government and Opposition in the final days of the session.
