BJP Plans Anti-Drug Yatras, Booth-Level Committees Ahead Of 2027 Punjab Polls

The BJP has begun preparing its organisational and electoral strategy for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, with anti-drug campaigns and booth-level mobilisation emerging as key priorities. During a two-day visit to Punjab, party national general secretary BL Santosh directed state leaders and workers to strengthen the organisation well ahead of the polls. The party plans to combine an anti-drug campaign with outreach around Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s welfare and development initiatives.

At a meeting with BJP leaders and workers in Ludhiana, Santosh called for anti-drug yatras to be organised across all 117 Assembly constituencies in September. Senior BJP leaders from Delhi are expected to participate in several of these programmes. The focus on drugs reflects the party’s attempt to make an issue that has influenced Punjab’s politics for years a central theme of its campaign, with the subject cutting across urban and rural areas.

The BJP’s approach comes after both the Congress in 2017 and the Aam Aadmi Party in 2022 made tackling drug abuse a major electoral promise. The party is now seeking to establish its own position on the issue, particularly after Modi launched the Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan on August 2 as part of a 100-week nationwide anti-drug campaign. BJP workers have also been asked to encourage people to watch Mann Ki Baat, where the Prime Minister could potentially address concerns surrounding drugs in Punjab.

Alongside the campaign issue, Santosh placed strong emphasis on rebuilding the BJP’s grassroots organisation. Punjab has around 25,000 polling booths, with each booth committee consisting of 11 members under the party’s organisational structure. Committees have so far been formed at around 15,000 booths, while the remaining 10,000 are expected to be completed by September 30. The party will subsequently submit a detailed organisational report on the exercise.

The booth-level drive is particularly important for the BJP after the farmers’ agitation, when the party faced difficulties in maintaining its organisational presence and worker network, especially in rural areas. The leadership is now seeking to rebuild that machinery before the formal election campaign begins. The party has also planned programmes marking PM Modi’s completion of 25 years in public life and initiatives to communicate the benefits of central government welfare schemes directly to voters.

The strategy comes amid differences within the Punjab BJP over a possible electoral alliance, with a sizeable section of state leaders reportedly opposed to such an arrangement. For now, the emphasis from the central leadership is on strengthening the party independently and preparing its organisation to contest Punjab’s 117 Assembly seats. By combining an anti-drug campaign, booth-level mobilisation and the Modi government’s welfare record, the BJP is seeking to establish its political narrative well before the 2027 election campaign formally begins.
