BJP Leader Maithili Thakur Criticises Lalu Yadav With ‘Dhritarashtra’ Remark
Maithili Thakur’s mythological analogy against Lalu Yadav sharpens BJP-RJD political tensions in Bihar.
A political war of words erupted in Bihar after Bharatiya Janata Party leader Maithili Thakur took a swipe at Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, likening him to Dhritarashtra, the blind king from the Indian epic Mahabharata. The remark, delivered during a political address, has intensified the ongoing exchange between the BJP and the RJD ahead of key political developments in the state.
Thakur described Yadav as a “king” with vast political experience but suggested that, like Dhritarashtra, he was unable or unwilling to rein in what she characterised as excesses within his party. The metaphor appeared aimed at drawing parallels between the epic figure’s perceived attachment to his sons and alleged dynastic tendencies within the RJD, where leadership roles have prominently featured members of Yadav’s family.
The comments triggered sharp reactions from RJD leaders, who accused the BJP of resorting to personal attacks instead of addressing substantive governance issues. Party spokespersons defended Yadav’s political legacy, citing his long tenure as Chief Minister of Bihar and former Union Railway Minister, and argued that the analogy was disrespectful and politically motivated.

Political analysts note that mythological references are frequently invoked in Indian political rhetoric to underscore narratives around leadership, morality and power. However, such comparisons often sharpen partisan divides, particularly in Bihar’s highly competitive political landscape, where alliances and caste equations play a decisive role.
The latest exchange underscores the intensifying campaign tone in the state, with both sides seeking to frame the debate around leadership credibility and governance records. While Yadav has not personally responded to the “Dhritarashtra” remark, the episode reflects the heightened rhetoric shaping Bihar’s evolving political discourse.
